Salt Loading Pier Evaluation

Since 1987, CTLGroup has performed seasonal condition assessments of a salt loading pier located on the island of Bonaire in the Lesser Antilles. The pier, which had been exposed to more than 30 years of severe chloride exposure from the salt product itself and harsh chloride-laden Caribbean sea spray, exhibited significant chlorideinduced reinforcement corrosion damage in many areas.

CTLGroup’s engineering team mobilized to the site, evaluated conditions using field and laboratory techniques, and designed repairs to restore both the structural integrity and extend the service life of the pier. Repairs were implemented, allowing the pier to still remain in service after more than 25 years.

The salt fount on Bonaire is famous for their long, dense and heavy crystals. Since the crystals are so large, they can be transformed into several different grades to be used in multiple ways, such as dyes for the textile industry, home water softeners, and processing in the petroleum industry.
