ASTM C856, Petographic Examination of Hardened Concrete

Petrographic examination is performed to assess concrete condition and problems related to concrete structures, construction materials, concrete placement, and service. Cores from structures of all types and sizes are routinely examined by our petrographers. Precast concrete products of all types are examined to assess quality, condition, and causes of distress. Examinations may be supplemented with SEM/EDX, chemical analyses, and physical tests.

Distress mechanisms investigated by petrographic examination include, but are not limited to:

  • Expansive aggregate reactions such as alkali-silica reaction (ASR), alkali-carbonate reaction (ACR), and pyrrhotite oxidation
  • Early freezing and freeze-thaw deterioration
  • Fire and heat-related damage
  • Sulfate attack and other forms of chemical attack
  • Aggressive chloride penetration
  • Delayed ettringite formation (DEF)

CTLGroup is accredited for petrography by the USACE and ISO 17025. Our petrographers have a broad background across the spectrum of specialties in geology and materials science. With more than a century of combined experience in applied petrography, our level of expertise is unmatched. Collectively, we have performed thousands of examinations on concrete.
