The University of Colorado at Boulder commissioned a comprehensive structural evaluation of its reinforced concrete steam tunnel system to assess existing structural conditions and develop repair options and recommendations.
Various sections of approximately 3-miles of reinforced concrete originally constructed in 1909 had exhibited concrete spalling, corrosion, and leakage. In addition to steam pipes, the tunnels also housed water lines, electrical cables and telecommunications lines.
CTLGroup served as the subconsultant responsible for detailed condition assessments, nondestructive testing, materials sampling and generation of as-built drawings. CTLGroup also consulted on the development of repair and construction sequencing recommendations based on a prioritized construction schedule coordinated with both the client and university personnel.
