When the entire U.S. Naval Academy Stadium was being rehabilitated and CTLGroup was contracted to determine the presence of voids underneath the seating area.
CTLGroup performed nondestructive testing and evaluated voids beneath the slab-on-grade portion of the stadium stands. Nondestructive impulse radar testing was performed on the lower half of the seating area, approximately 50,000 sq ft, on the east and west sides of the stadium.
Testing revealed isolated areas where voiding was present in the stadium seating area. Confirmation drillings/inspection holes were created at five separate locations to confirm the results of the nondestructive testing. Voids of 2 in. to 8 in. were detected throughout the stadium.
