Determining the solar reflectance index of materials for LEED NC version 2.2 (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Sustainable Sites Credit 7.1: Heat Island Effect, Non-Roof and Credit 7.2: Heat Island Effect: Roof.
Three specimens are required. The surface of the specimens must be representative of the surface of the paving material, flat work, roofing material, etc., being evaluated. For granular material, please call the contact below to discuss sampling procedure. For concrete, the specimens should be placed, finished, and cured in the same manner as the concrete being evaluated. Specimens to be tested for solar reflectance shall be relatively flat and shall have a minimum surface dimension greater than approximately 8 cm (3 in.). However, for ease of finishing and to ensure a representative surface, specimens may have a larger surface area. Since this is a surface measurement, no minimum thickness is specified. The specimens should be thick enough so that they do not break during shipping. After 3 to 7 days, concrete specimens should have sufficient strength to be shipped to CTLGroup. If specimens arrive at CTLGroup in a wet or saturated condition, they will be air-dried until the surface is dry. Care should be taken in packing specimens to ensure the surface finish is not damaged.
